Instructions to transfer motor vehicle ownership in Uganda

Log into TIN to transfer motor vehicle on URA website

How to transfer motor vehicle ownership in Uganda is one popular question people ask. Yes, with many involved in the buying and selling of used vehicles, the need to understand how to change ownership is important.

Myself I didn’t know how it worked until recently when I bought a used Toyota Hilux double cabin and I was required to put it into my names before they would hand in the car to me. Off I started the journey which I thought was hard only to find that everything was very easy, fast and done online the same way registering a business does.

Checklist of motor vehicle transfer process

  • Active TIN number of the seller and buyer
  • National ID of the seller and buyer (Passport with Work or Resident permit) for Aliens
  • Seller must have his Password of the TIN or of the TIN associated email
  • An internet connection plus a printer

All of the above are mandatory since without any of them, the transfer process will never be completed. For example, both of the seller and buyer identification documents must be attached on the application form when submitting to the MoWT licensing office. The TIN password of the buyer is required in order to log in to the URA portal to initiate the change of ownership application.
